With a grant received through the New Jersey Department of State Office of Faith Based Initiatives, IMPACT CDC has established the Youth Leadership Institute (YLI)-Emerging Leaders Program. The Emerging Leaders Program is designed to build the leadership skills and developmental abilities of target youth while making a significant contribution to their community. IMPACT CDC has recruited both traditional and non-traditional youth leaders, traditional leaders are of those youth who have excelled academically, and have demonstrated leadership ability and civic interest in the form of school- and/or community-related service activities, or other related activities. 'Non-traditional leaders' as those youth, who despite a record of disciplinary actions and substandard academic performance, were always deemed the leader in their peer circle, due to their charisma and ability to motivate peers. The content and instructional delivery of the Emerging Leaders curriculum is guided by a research-based, program model. The "Point of Light" model consists of 17 teaching module and 14 experiential exercises, the curriculum takes students through and eight-phase model of problem solving and goal setting.
The YLI-Emerging Leaders Program has actively engage the parents of YLI youth. A structured set of training activities and focus group sessions, conducted by external facilitators who have expertise in family and youth development, provide parents with a range of advice, tools and techniques to talk to their own children regarding to leadership.
Two additional elements of the YLI program that are noteworthy. First, with a state-of-the-art computer center recently established in our Montclair offices, much of our activities will be technologically driven for both our youth and parents. IMPACT CDC will expand its usage of various software packages for training and overall programmatic purposes. Lastly, intensive and individualized tutorial support for our program participants will be provided by teachers, professors and deans of notable colleges and universities, and undergraduate students across New Jersey. This support is chiefly aimed at fostering and promoting the value and importance of sustaining high academic standards.
